THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON
One day the Duke of Wellington (the British general who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo), went out hunting with his friends. They arrived at a farm gate and wished to pass trough the farm. The farmer had seen them coming and, as huntsmen often rode through his fields and destroyed the crops, he had told one of his boys to shut the gate and not to let anyone enter.
One of the huntsmen ordered the boy to open the gate, but the boy refused. Others came up and said they would beat him if he did not open it. The boy still refused, saying that he had received orders from his master and intended to obey them. One of the riders offered him a coin but it had no effect.
Finally an old man rode up and said, 'I'm the Duke of Wellington. People always obey me. I command you to open the gate.' The boy looked at him respectfully, but replied, 'Sir, a general would not wish me to disobey orders that I have received. I will not open the gate." The Duke was surprised at first, but then he laughed and said to his friends: 'If I had an army of soldiers like that boy, I could conquer the world.'
As the riders went away, the boy shouted to the farmer: 'Master, Master, I have done what Napoleon could not do. I have turned back the Duke of Wellington.'
